Nick Nelson wins the Ultra4 4 Wheel Parts Glen Helen Grand Prix 2nd year in a row
Nelson, who in 2012 won the title of the Ultra4 National Champion as well as the Sportsman of the year award, entered 2013 with a qualified spot in the King of the Hammers race back in February. With a disappointing break occurring during the race, Nelson, as well as his team, spent time after the race to prep the car completely for the rest of the 2013 season.
During Friday’s qualifying round, Nick had the fastest time among 80 cars, including the 4400, 4500 and 4600 class cars. His time was 5:35.2, just four seconds ahead of fellow team Nitto/Jimmy’s 4×4 driver, Loren Healy. His qualifying time would put him in the front of the pack for the first prelim round Saturday morning, allowing him to advance to the finals later that afternoon.
In the final round of the day, consisting of 40 4400 cars, Nick, along with co-driver Jeremy Whitt of Gearworks, were able to keep the 4404 car in contention, battling a loss of 1st gear early on, showing that their hard work prepping the car for the past 3 months and smart driving would pay off. At the end of the final round, Nick crossed the finish line completing 21 laps of the course, earning them the win for the 2nd consecutive year at Glen Helen Raceway.
“We are lucky to be able to race as we do here on this Memorial Day weekend thanks to all the men and women past and present who have fought for our way of life. I ran this race in remembrance of my good friend and fallen Marine, Benny Gray Cockerham III, I am thrilled to take home the win in his honor.” Nelson stated following his finish. “Our pit crew made all the difference in securing the win with a quick tire change and some extra additions along the way.”
Nick Nelson and his team from Nick Nelson Motorsports hail from the Ultra4 racing community, racing both desert and rock endurance style events, based out of Las Vegas, NV. The team was founded in 2010 and has been racing competitively since.
