King of the Hammers Race Receives Permit Approval
County provides approval necessary for Bureau of Land Management to grant the annual special event permit after careful consideration of extensive onsite requirements and mitigation protocols.

January 14, 2021 (Johnson Valley, CA) – Today, King of the Hammers (KOH) was granted a special use permit for the annual racing event in the California desert. The multi-day off-road racing competition is set for January 28-February 6, 2021.
The organizers have worked diligently for many months to progressively and proactively execute the event as safely as possible. San Bernardino County and Bureau of Land Management have reviewed the plans and determined the competition can take place. Currently, state and national parks, OHV areas, professional sports and other outdoor businesses are permitted with proper mitigation measures in place. The organization has implemented key guidelines to create a safe space ranging from required COVID testing, onsite COVID testing, temperature checks and health screenings, required facemasks and distancing within the gated all-outdoor Hammertown venue that includes racers, staff, participating companies and ticketed individuals.
“We have worked hard to ensure that we can continue to operate in a safe and responsible manner and have gone above and beyond some of the current standard guidelines,” noted King of the Hammers founder Dave Cole. “People need the outdoors and are responsibly recreating outdoors daily through the pandemic, and ski resorts across the state are seeing packed slopes. We don’t take this lightly and know that an entire ecosystem of people and businesses are relying on the motor sport and aftermarket automotive equipment industry to stay healthy.  And they rely on King of the Hammers.”
King of the Hammers is in its 14th year and is considered the toughest set of one-day races in the world over an 8-day period. Its online webcast attracts over 3 million viewers globally.  Taking place on the famed Hammers trails of Johnson Valley Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area, the competition has been a mainstay for racers, recreationalists and businesses alike.  Known for grassroots innovation and new for 2021, KOH has launched an aggressive call to action for electric vehicle entries to further push the automotive space for the adoption of electrified vehicles and their performance.
“The event was consciously scaled down this year to reduce crowds and encourage watching via live webcast.  We know that our restrictive, protective guidelines will impact the event this year. We encourage the public to stay safe and watch the racing action online.”
