HOT SPRINGS, AR – April 15th, 2014: Chicky Barton claimed his first ULTRA4 victory at last week’s GenRight ULTRA4s at Superlift Park race. With 44 registered drivers, the race was the largest 4WD Hardware Eastern Regional ULTRA4 race to date.  Barton, in his new independent front suspension (IFS) vehicle, qualifed fifth on Friday, and seemingly never let off the throttle the entire race, managing to stay close to the front of the pack until taking the lead and never looking back.

Fortunately for spectators and drivers, the rain that threatened throughout the week arrived both before and after race day. While the course was muddy, the skies were clear for the drop of the green flag on Saturday morning. Erik Miller qualified first on Friday, followed by Jason Shipman, Wayland Campbell and Mike Colville.  Cars left the line one every 20 seconds on the 6.75 mile, narrow, tree-lined course. The course was technical and left little room for errors or passing.

Kentucky native, Bill Baird was the fastest through on the first two laps with Barton close on his heels, Both two-time Kings of the Hammers Shannon Campbell and Loren Healy started towards the back on Saturday due to qualifying issues on Friday. Both continued to work their way to the front, with Campbell ultimately beating out Miller for 2nd place by less than 3 hundredths of a second. At the end of the day, 24 of the 39 vehicles that started the race were able to successfully finish five laps in the allotted five hours.

Following the morning 4400s race was the 4500/4600/UTV race which was won by Rob Matzell who was the only Rubicon Express Modified vehicle to finish three laps. Check out the race recap video at: http://youtu.be/Sjv6gnqXsFM or by clicking the link below.

Once the drivers had a chance to fix any repairs from their morning race, 12 ULTRA4s and 12 SRRS Rock Bouncers competed in the 2nd annual RCV SRRS vs. ULTRA4 shootout. Ultimately, Tom Wayes won overall with the fastest combined time of 43.788 seconds and Danny Smith was the fastest bouncer with a combined time of 51.311.
The next ULTRA4 event will be the Metalcloak Stampede held in Prairie City, CA. More than 80 drivers are already registered for the event, which is the the first race in the Trail-Gear Western Regional Series held  June 6th and 7th. Look for ULTRA4s to return to the midwest for the Badlands UMC event held the last weekend of June in Attica, IN.
